Hannah did it unconsciously. A slight turn of the head, a brief look when she passed by her ex-boyfriend's house every night from work. The windows would be dark and the door would greet her with its brown imperturbable face. She would drive on without a second thought. Tonight the lights were on and Hannah hesitated. Mark is home, she thought. He's home and smoking a cigarette or watching TV. She had the sudden urge to see him, walk up those steps, knock on his door and talk to him with either the smoke from his favorite brand of cigarettes or the noise of late night sitcoms in the background.
